A Long And Interesting History...

Project Management really isn't the young profession you might think it is - we can actually trace its roots back for millennia! Until the turn of the twentieth century, large civil engineering projects would have been managed by the design architects and engineers themselves. In the early twentieth century, an American engineer called Henry Gantt produced his famous project management tool the Gantt Chart.

Around the same time the French engineer Henri Fayol developed 'Fayolism' - functions and principles for management. Fayol's five functions - namely planning, organising, commanding, co-ordinating and controlling have stood the test of time, though many have now replaced commanding and co-ordinating with leading.

Project Management In The 20th Century

You could begin the story of modern planning project management in America in the 1950's, but of course it hadn't yet really got into the human attributes of motivation and leadership. The Polaris missile project involved so many different aspects that a new management system had to be developed to handle it. The answer was to produce a revival of Taylor's scientific management, a project model known as PERT. Other mathematical project- scheduling models were also developed which quickly spread to private enterprises. In the mid-fifties pioneering work on cost estimating, cost management and engineering economics was also added to the mix.

IMPA

European project managers formed an association known as the IPMA towards the end of the sixties. A non-profit Swiss registered organisation, it now claims to have over 40,000 global members. Training from the IMPA comes as a four level program that is designed as an on-going competence development process.

The PMI (Project Management Institute)

America followed in '69 with their non-profit professional organisation, the Project Management Institute (PMI). The globally acknowledged project management guide PMBOK was first published by PMI in 1996 (although the latest edition now contains major changes). This process-based guide deals with just about all information and practices in project management. A thorough understanding of the fundamentals covered would make you a subject matter expert. Professional training programs can teach you what you need to know. If you invest time and energy into this training, you will be ready for the respected PMI certifications, the prestigious PMP and CAPM qualifications. Employment experience alongside your studies is required.

PRINCE2

PRINCE was introduced in the UK in 1989 as a government standard for IT project management. PRINCE2 is now aimed at all other types of projects as well.

PRINCE2 2009 describes forty different activities that can be organised into seven processes. Training programs will provide students with the ability to organise, plan and control projects using the PRINCE2 method.

The model ensures that the focus is always on the viability of the project in relation to the overall business objectives. It's the sum total of over 20 years of industry experience.

Depending on your present level of knowledge and experience, you may wish to consider other college introductory courses.
